Twitter tools to consider using

In this latest blog post I am going to show you some free Twitter Tools you should consider using on your websites. I have used screenshot to show examples of not just setting these up but also how it looks once it is on your website.

Twitter provides some great tools for social promotion, which are easy to create and easy to deploy. To access the tools, visit this link to access the Twitter resources page: https://about.twitter.com/resources/buttons

Twitter Tools

Tailor your Twitter Tool

To tailor the code, simply complete the options on the left of the screen and watch as the button changes configuration as the changes are applied. The first option allows a separate URL to be shared from the page the button appears on. So a button on the site registration page can share the site home page for example. The second box allows customisable text to be applied. The “Show Count” option shows how many times the page has been shared.

The “Via” box is where the account username becomes important in terms of messaging; for example a traditional dating username will have a different style of name to an adult themed one. “Recommend” allows the input of another account to follow.

Hashtag” is important to enable tweets to be categorised in Twitter searches, and the tool allows the inclusion of an automatic hashtag each time the site is shared.

Choose “Large” for a larger button, and opt in to tailoring for Twitter. This feature determines the people you might enjoy following based on your recent visits to websites in the Twitter ecosystem (sites that have integrated Twitter buttons or widgets). Specifically, the feature works by suggesting people who are frequently followed by other Twitter users that visit the same websites.

Once the selections are finalised, copy the code and embed in a site. Experiment with where the site appears best, usually either in the Front Page Simple text section, or in the Front Page Advanced section just before the {%Footer%} macro. The code should appear like this;

The easiest Button to Button

The next button available enables a button to be included to allow visitors to follow a Twitter account. Simply add in the user account name and generate the specific code for pasting into a site.

The third button can be configured to tweet a particular hashtag which should be a keyword related to the site, which over time creates volume against the hashtag to increase its prominence.

The fourth button posts a tweet to a named account, with an option to include some default text which will appear in the tweet box for posting.

This is an example of a site with a couple of tweet buttons deployed:

There are also Facebook and Google+ buttons deployed; Facebook buttons will be covered in a future article, Google+ buttons have been covered already in an article which can be found here at this link: “Google+ introduction”.

In Summary:

  • Social signals are important for SEO and Twitter is an important social media platform to be featured on;
  • Twitter provides some easy to use yet powerful buttons to add to a web site;
  • Experiment with the buttons to ensure they are right for the site, and where they appear.

Good luck!

Google+ introduction – a view on how to leverage it

Google+ is a great social networking platform and is ideal for promoting and discussing dating sites of all niches. Some basic facts about Google+, published in October 2013 here on USA Today:

Google+ has seen a 58% jump in users in recent months. Google+ has 300 million monthly active users, up from 190 million in May. Google+ members who have interacted socially with any of Google’s services in the past 30 days total 540 million, up from 390 million in May. Google is also uploading 1.5 billion photos per week, and that number is increasing at “an amazing rate”.

The message is clear – Google+ is growing fast, Google is backing & promoting its growth & development and the platform is ok for adult content, which suits adult dating promotion and discussions in particular.

Google Plus

There are a variety of ways to engage with Google+, either as an individual, a brand or a business.

One of the simplest ways to engage is to add a Google+ button to a site. This enables visitors to post a comment to their own Google+ page, which will be seen by their circles and perhaps they will share it, and so on. The code for a Google+ button is generated as follows:

Firstly, visit this link (you will be required to register with Google to access this page):https://developers.google.com/+/web/+1button/ :

Select the style, annotation and language options which will generate a preview of the button. There are some advanced functions to consider as well, especially posting the URL of a different page to the one that the button is clicked on. This is relevant if the button is located on different site pages, but it is the home page that is the desired page to link to from the Google+ post.

Once the final version is settled on, copy the code for insertion into a site. A good place for this is just before the {FooterMacro} tag on a site’s homepage; experiment with where the button renders until the right place is found. This is an example from one of my sites, with the button code placed in the “Front Page (simple)” section of the site, along with a Tweet button (more on Twitter in a future article). The buttons then render (tech speak for appear) in this section of the site, subtle but prominent:

Another button to consider is the “Share” button. This can be found by scrolling down the page and locating the link to the Share button page in the left hand column, just under “1+ button”. Once formatted and selected, it will look like this:

Google Plus Share Button

Another great option is a Google+ badge, which is best used once a Google+ profile page has been established. This badge personalises the link to a great extent, and includes a link both to a Google+ profile or page and a +1 button in the same box:

Dateblogger Google Plus

Explore the options for different buttons for different parts of sites, as some buttons are better suited to specific locations – don’t use too many, subtle placement to encourage a click will start to build likes and followers over time. Social signals, i.e. the number of times a site is shared and commented upon, are also great for site ranking and seo.

Future articles on Google+ will cover how to build circles, how to join them and building and working an effective Google+ profile. Google+ pages will also be explored, where themes for niche dating can be developed and circles built around them.

In Summary:

  • Google+ is a fast growing social community, and is a must to engage with at some level;
  • There is a large variety of tools which enable visitors to post to their own Google+ page, and to follow re socially;
  • The button tools are easy to create and easy to embed;
  • It is easy to grow and manage circles by niche, ideal for niche dating site brand promotion and awareness building.

Good luck!

SEO best practice checklist 2

This article is a follow on from my recent article on SEO best practice checklist, covering basics, content, anchor text, images and heading tags. To conclude on best practice SEO guidance, I’ll cover robots.txt, no follow links, mobile sites, backlinks and recommended free tools.

Robots.txt

This is a file which must be loaded into your root directory, with instructions for search engines not to access, crawl and index certain parts of your site. Certain pages are better excluded as they may be considered as duplicate content, which can be a negative ranking factor for a site. However, if the page is adapted for unique and relevant content then it should be delisted from the robots.txt file exclusions; otherwise the page won’t be visible to search engines.

Fortunately, Dating Factory provides easy access to a site’s robots.txt file in the Individual pages section of the site editing area. The default settings are ok and in general should be left as they are. There is a Dating Factory Tutorial which you can read here which tells you more about the settings and why.

If pages are added to the site, always consider whether they should be crawled and adjust the robot.txt file accordingly.

No Follow links

This is relevant in a couple of instances – where there is content with links to a site that may harm the site’s ranking, and / or where there is a blog on a dating site with public commenting. Links which are included in content can be flagged to be ignored by search engines by adding the rel=”no follow” tag into the link code: <a href=http://www.urllinkname.com” rel=”no follow”</a>description text</a>.

Links within a blog’s public comments could pass on reputation to pages that don’t warrant it, or are “spammy sites” themselves. Blog comment areas are highly susceptible to comment spam, which is a negative indicator for page rank in SEO. Two good methods to avoid comment spam: 1) use CAPTCHA’s which identifies the poster as human with grammatical and numerical checks, and 2) turn on comment moderation, where every comment needs to be approved prior to posting.

Mobile sites

Dating Factory sites are all mobile enabled by default, which is a fantastic benefit of working with Dating Factory. There are some tweaks that should be made to the default mobile settings, such as adding a mini logo (a smaller sized image based on the site’s main logo) to make it distinct and appealing to mobile visitors. There is a link in the Individual pages editing section of the site to access the mobile page settings.

Dating Factory Mobile Versions

The first thing to do is to click on the check box to switch the front page mobile site icon to “on”, then remember to press “Save”! Then upload a logo 32×32 in size, and amend the text to a strap line for the site, subject to whether the logo is properly legible or contains the words describing the site. Then choose the format of the mobile site landing page, preview them to see what they will look like and save the most appropriate version.

Search for the site on a mobile phone to check that it is indexed and displaying correctly.

Backlinks

Backlinks must be one of the most discussed and contentious issues in SEO. It can be a great way of effectively promoting new content, leading to faster discovery by those who are interested in the same subject. One method is to use a blog in WordPress or Blogger, and post about sites on these blogs, effectively creating backlinks to the sites, and information which others can share or comment on. Avoid buying links to other sites, and ensure that links are relevant to the site being linked to and from.

Free tools

Google Webmaster provides some great free tools to give insight into a site’s performance and can provide pointers to page rank issues. Always check for crawl errors on the Crawl Error page of Webmaster tools, which shows the urls in a site that Google tried to access and couldn’t. Review and fix where required, and Google will pick the changes up on its next visit.

HOT TIP: REMEMBER – There’s almost nothing a competitor can do to harm a site’s ranking or have a site removed from a search engine index. If you’re concerned about another site linking to yours, contact the webmaster of the site in question. Google aggregates and organizes information published on the web; it doesn’t control the content of these pages.

So the bottom line is that site owners are in control of how a site is indexed and ranked. Ensuring adherence to basic SEO principles give the site as good a chance as any other from being ranked highly, with Page 1 Spot 1 being the goal.

In Summary

  • The basics in this article need reviewing and monitoring to ensure both compliance with SEO best practice and avoidance of issues which could downgrade the site;
  • Align the robots.txt file with the content that search engines can link; it’s a waste of time generating new content on a page that’s blocked by the site’s own robot.txt file;
  • Review any links from the site to other sites, and vice versa, and check that they are relevant and worthy of a link;
  • If there is a blog embedded in the site, ensure that blog comments are set to need pre-approval before posting and use CAPTCHAs to filter automatic spamming; also ensure that “no follow” is set against blog comments to avoid association with spammy sites;
  • Update the site’s mobile page settings so that the site looks good on a mobile device; check it out on a mobile as well, don’t just assume it will look ok;
  • Backlinks muse be relevant, quality and not over-used; never buy links from link farms;
  • Use the free tools on Google Webmasters to monitor a site’s health, in conjunction with others, especially Google Analytics.

Good luck!
